Schedule C Instructions, Explained Line by Line

A plain-English companion to the IRS Schedule C instructions for entering income, cost of goods sold, expenses, and vehicle information.

Use this as an orientation, then complete the current-year IRS form and instructions. Tax forms change, and the exact line labels for a filing year control.

Header and income

The top of Schedule C identifies the owner, business name, activity, business code, address, accounting method, and material participation. Part I then collects gross receipts, returns, cost of goods sold, and other business income.

Your books should support the total. Payment processors may report gross amounts that differ from deposits after fees, refunds, or reserves, so reconcile instead of copying a net bank figure.

Expense lines

Enter each cost in the category that best matches its nature. Mixed personal and business costs need a defensible allocation. Capital purchases, inventory, meals, home office costs, and vehicles can have additional rules beyond the label printed on the form.

Profit, loss, and follow-on forms

The final Schedule C result generally flows to Schedule 1 and may be used on Schedule SE. A loss can trigger additional limitation questions. Review the current instructions for required attachments and special situations before filing.
